Nothing is charged for the visit. On a lot out on the fan the first measurement taken is the fall, because water off the San Gabriels runs south through your yard whether you planned for it or not. Demolition, base, pour, finish and cleanup each get their own line.
Every job leaves with a written workmanship guarantee against defects in how it was built. What we get called back for here is a joint that opened where cobble was left in the base, and that one is ours to fix. Ground that moves on its own, and the wear a slab takes, are not.

Foothill Rancho Cucamonga Concrete is a concrete contractor owned and run in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. Elias Navarro started it in 2018 with 16 years on the Inland Empire crews behind him, and the work runs across 20 cities in San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Riverside and Orange counties.
The city is three old communities - Alta Loma, Cucamonga and Etiwanda - joined in 1977 and then built over with tract housing for thirty years. So the driveways, patios and garage floors coming out now are mostly 1980s and 1990s work, reaching the end of the 30 to 40 years a slab poured properly lasts.
The C-8 Concrete classification sits with the California Contractors State License Board, we carry liability insurance on every job, and permits go in through the city's Online Permit Center with one of us at the inspection. Every estimate is measured and written on site.
How We Build
Nothing about the specification changes with the size of the job. Cobble is screened out before the base is compacted, thickness is set by what will park on it, and no slab is left overnight without its joints cut.

Elias Navarro spent 16 years on other people's crews before opening Foothill Rancho Cucamonga Concrete in 2018 - tract driveways through Etiwanda, warehouse floors along Fourth Street, and a long run of walls on the foothill grades. The C-8 is in his name. He lives in Alta Loma, measures every estimate himself and is on the job for the pour.

On the Ground
Three towns joined into one city, ground that coarsens the further north you go, and an HOA letter to get before some pours: all of it lands on the estimate.
Rancho Cucamonga was incorporated in 1977 out of three separate communities - Alta Loma against the foothills, Cucamonga along the old Route 66 line on Foothill Boulevard, and Etiwanda out east - and the seam is still readable on a map. Almost everything since has been master-planned tract: Terra Vista and Victoria through the 1980s and 1990s, the Etiwanda edges into the 2000s, Victoria Gardens in 2004. Which puts most of the concrete failing now at 30 to 45 years old.
Everything here is fan deposit off the San Gabriels, spread south by debris flows out of Deer, Day and Etiwanda creeks. It drains beautifully and it compacts badly: rounded cobble rolls instead of locking, and old wash channels leave soft lines that nothing on the surface shows. The stone gets bigger the closer you are to the mountain front, so a base up on Hillside is screened harder than one down by Fourth Street. Look your parcel up on the USDA Web Soil Survey.
Permits are issued by the Building and Safety Services Department at the City of Rancho Cucamonga and filed through its Online Permit Center rather than at a counter; anything touching the curb, the parkway or the public walk takes a right-of-way permit as well. There is a second approval most towns do not have: the master-planned communities run architectural review, so a colored or stamped finish visible from the street needs a sample board and a letter before a truck is ordered.
Most drives here sit on a slope, and that is what settles it: a slab holds a straight fall to the street for decades, while asphalt creeps downhill in the heat and a paver field loses its line the first time water runs under it.

Cheapest to lay is asphalt and dearest to keep. Pavers reverse both. Concrete sits in the middle, and on a grade it is the only one that stays where it was set.
Because rounded stone will not lock together, and a slab laid over it settles where the stones roll. The wash off the San Gabriels left cobble through most of the city, heaviest north of Banyan, so we screen it out and compact clean angular rock in lifts.
Yes. The fall has to be built into the slab rather than left to the finisher, so water leaves the pad instead of standing at the house. On the steeper Alta Loma and Red Hill streets that means a thickened edge downhill and a drain the slab is formed around.
In most of the master-planned tracts here, yes. Victoria, Terra Vista and the Etiwanda communities run architectural review, and color, stamp pattern and anything visible from the street go in before the pour. We make up the sample board and wait for the letter.
The joints do. Concrete shrinks as it cures and will part somewhere; a groove cut 2 to 3 feet apart for every inch of thickness gives it a straight line to take instead. Over a cobble subgrade we set them tighter, because the ground moves more than the slab.
Inside your own lot line, mostly not - the Residential Code lets a driveway or walk under 30 inches go in without one, and never names a patio slab. The curb, parkway and public walk are right-of-way, and a retaining wall over 4 feet needs Building and Safety.
Load decides it. 4 inches carries people and cars; 5 to 6 inches carries a truck, an RV or a workshop. Depth is the one figure on an estimate that nothing puts right later - an inch light and it cracks under ordinary use within a few years. Yours goes on the sheet.

Nobody can put a figure on it from a description, and the biggest lever is depth: an inch more on a 4-inch slab is a quarter more concrete and more rock beneath it. After that it is how much comes out, whether the fall needs a drain, and the finish. All four get measured on a free visit and written down.
Three things: the square footage, the depth it is poured to, and what the old one is sitting on. A 1980s Terra Vista frontage on native fan gravel is a different dig from an Alta Loma drive on a grade with cobble through it, and demolition and base are where that difference lands on the sheet.
By size, by access and by finish, on a 4-inch slab over compacted base. Access moves it most in the tracts: a side gate wide enough for a buggy is one job, and a yard reachable only through the house is barrows, which is hours rather than material. Stamp or color adds a day for the seal.
4 inches where cars park, 5 to 6 inches where a truck, a trailer or an RV does. Depth is the cheapest insurance on the job and nothing recovers it afterwards - a slab poured an inch light cracks under ordinary use inside a few years. What we are pouring is on your estimate before you sign.
Because the slab only holds what is underneath it, and most failures start below the concrete. Clean compacted rock spreads load and lets water out from under the pad. Cobble ground will not do that on its own: rounded stone rolls under pressure, so we screen it out and put angular base back in lifts.
They are what keeps a crack straight. Concrete shrinks while it cures and will part somewhere, so we cut grooves 2 to 3 feet apart for every inch of thickness and the crack follows the line. On a lot with cobble in the subgrade the spacing goes tighter, because the ground moves more than the concrete.
It can, and how depends on how far up the fan you are. North toward the foothills the wash is coarse - cobble and boulders that leave voids under a base nobody screened. Further south the material is finer sand and gravel that drains well but settles under old fill. Check your parcel on the USDA Web Soil Survey.
October through April, when the afternoons stay under 90 degrees. Rancho Cucamonga tops out in the low 90s in July and August, and heat pulls water out of the surface before the slab has strength. We pour through summer anyway, starting before 8 AM and keeping the surface wet for the 7-day cure the American Cement Association sets out.
Yes, and on a south-facing drive sooner than the label suggests. Bare concrete is porous, so oil and water sink in and the mark stays; and the ultraviolet load up against the mountains fades stamped and colored work faster than it fades nearer the coast. Reseal every 2 to 3 years.
3 to 5 working days on site for a normal residential job, then the cure. On the older Alta Loma lots the first two days are usually breaking out and digging, which is the part that varies. Foot traffic at 24 to 48 hours, cars at 7 days, anything heavy at 28 days.
Inside the lot line, usually not - the California Residential Code exempts driveways and walks. It does not name patio slabs and the city publishes no exempt list of its own, so that one we ask at the counter. The approach and the parkway are right-of-way and need their own permit, and a wall over 4 feet including footing needs a building permit from the City of Rancho Cucamonga.
